Shocking Kidnappings Rock Murang’a: Former MCA and Son Abducted in Harrowing Incident

Residents of Kairi village in Mathioya sub-county, Murang’a County are in disbelief after both a father and his son were kidnapped by unknown assailants.

Joseph Machiri, 60, a former MCA who served from 2013 to 2017 in Murang’a County Assembly, was seized by a group of men who invaded his home on Sunday night.

The assailants, captured on CCTV cameras at the politician’s residence, had their faces concealed and were armed with firearms.

Some of the intruders were seen with gas cylinders, presumably used to break into the house.

Adding to the alarm, Machiri’s son, David Machiri, was abducted earlier the same day from his home in the Thogoto area of Kiambu County.

According to the family, the group of over ten gunmen entered the home just before 11 pm, cut off the electricity, and forcibly took Joseph.

The incident has left the family deeply disturbed and worried for their safety and the well-being of their two relatives.

The family’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, noted that the two had recently been granted bail in an ongoing Sh1.5 billion fraud case involving a bank.

David, who worked for the bank, had been arrested on July 12 and charged with bank fraud.

Njiru criticized security forces, claiming the abductions reflect a troubling pattern of abuse of power in recent months.

He advised the family to report the incident to the nearest police station, where officers observed the damage to the gate and doors.

Njiru has called on Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to intervene and ensure the safe return of his clients.

“This is not the Kenya people want. Kenyans want a country where the rule of law is followed and respected,” he said.

Nancy Wambui, Machiri’s wife, recounted their day at church before returning home.

“We had just gone to bed when the dogs began barking wildly, which made us curious about the commotion outside,” she explained.

Wambui said the dogs were reacting to the men attempting to break into their home.

Realizing they were under attack, they raised an alarm, and neighbors quickly arrived but were stunned to find the gunmen still at the scene.

Kenneth Mwangi, Machiri’s brother, and a nearby resident, expressed his shock at seeing armed intruders in the compound.

“I arrived with a panga but was met by men with guns who ordered me back. They seemed to be security personnel,” he said.

Susan Mwaura, David’s wife, recounted leaving her husband at their Kiambu home to attend church on Sunday.

When she found a missed call from him and attempted to return the call, his phone was off.

“I still don’t know where he is,” she said, visibly distressed.

Mathioya sub-county police commander Paul Karobia confirmed receiving reports of the abductions and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the perpetrators.

“We have learned that Machiri was taken by armed thugs in a car with no license plates,” he said.

“They also stole his mobile phone and his wife’s phone before leaving with him. The DCI is actively pursuing leads, and we hope to make progress soon.”
