Reject Oparanya’s CS Nomination, EACC Urges Parliament

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has reached out to the National Assembly, requesting that they reject Wycliffe Oparanya’s nomination as Cabinet Secretary due to integrity concerns.

In a letter dated July 29 and sent to the Clerk of the National Assembly, EACC pointed out that Oparanya, who has been nominated for the position of Co-operatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development CS, is currently embroiled in a corruption case.

EACC revealed that they have sought preservation orders for Oparanya’s assets, alleging that he possesses proceeds of corruption linked to a conflict of interest, with the case still pending in court.

On July 26, Oparanya experienced a significant blow when the High Court refused to lift the freeze on his assets in an ongoing investigation into the alleged misappropriation of Sh1.3 billion during his tenure as Kakamega governor.

The EACC is pursuing the recovery of over Sh1.3 billion from Oparanya and several companies connected to Kakamega County officials.

Oparanya is set to undergo vetting by MPs on Sunday.

At a recent Luhya community development conference, Oparanya expressed his readiness to serve in the national unity government.

“I am fully prepared to contribute to this government of national unity. I will be transparent, offer suggestions, and propose the best solutions for the nation’s progress,” he stated.

The former governor also mentioned his involvement in developing the Vision 2030 plan, indicating that he understands the expectations of the Head of State.
