Ruto Should Apologise to Kenyans for Deaths, Failures Before Initiating Talks- Former Mp

President William Ruto should issue an apology to the nation before initiating talks, according to a statement from a Kiambu politician.

Former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi emphasized that as the head of state, Ruto must demonstrate care and concern for the citizens.

The President has observed the protests by Gen Z, which have resulted in fatalities and injuries. There have been widespread calls from politicians, civil society, and religious leaders for Ruto to heed the concerns of Kenyans.

Gen Z youths are demonstrating against issues including unemployment, corruption, the appointment of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission commissioners, the withdrawn 2024 Finance Bill, the high cost of living, and alleged police brutality.

“The President has seen the origins of the Gen Z protests, the casualties, and the appeals from civil society, media, religious leaders, the political class, and concerned citizens urging him to address youth issues,” Mwathi remarked.

He added that the withdrawal of the opposition from national dialogue and ongoing Gen Z protests indicate unresolved issues.

Mwathi made these remarks in Limuru, urging residents to pray for peace to enable normalcy to resume.

The former legislator suggested that since previous approaches to governance have not yielded results, the President should change tack and apologize for past grievances.

“Ruto should take a decisive step and apologize for the accusations and events that have occurred under his presidency, including loss of life,” Mwathi stated.

“All these incidents have taken place during his tenure. As head of state, he must work to de-escalate tensions.”

Mwathi, who chaired the National Security Committee of the National Assembly, ran for the Limuru MP seat under the Jubilee Party but lost to UDA incumbent John Kiragu.

He warned that failure by the President to swiftly address national stability concerns could erode public trust.

“It’s disheartening when citizens lose faith in their leader. He must act swiftly to address pressing national issues. His role as a unifying figure is crucial and must be upheld,” Mwathi urged.

He also reminded Ruto to uphold his directives to government officials and leaders regarding fundraising events, noting a recent fundraiser attended by the President.
