Violent Incident at Nairobi’s Makadara Law Courts: Magistrate Shot, Officer Killed

Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti sustained gunshot wounds during a violent incident at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi on June 13, Thursday.

The shocking event unfolded when she was reportedly shot by a police officer while presiding over court proceedings, prompting an immediate rush to transport her to a hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that chaos erupted when a senior police officer discharged his firearm, causing severe injuries to Magistrate Kivuti.

Quick action by other security personnel in the courtroom led to the officer being shot dead, but not before tragic scenes of bloodshed were witnessed in parts of the courtroom, as captured in disturbing images shared online.

The incident not only disrupted the scheduled court proceedings but also sparked a flurry of investigative activity, with detectives promptly arriving at the scene to ascertain the motives behind the officer’s actions.

Initial reports suggest a possible motive related to a disagreement over the officer’s wife’s bond hearing, which Magistrate Kivuti was presiding over and reportedly declined to grant.

The officer had traveled from Kisumu County specifically for the hearing concerning his wife, who was implicated in an ongoing case.

Seeking her release on bond, his actions escalated into a violent confrontation that ended tragically, resulting in his death and injuries to others, including a member of the public.

Official statements from both the Judiciary and law enforcement agencies are anticipated to shed further light on the incident and address concerns regarding courtroom security and the circumstances that led to such a dramatic escalation of violence within a judicial setting.

Meanwhile, the deceased officer’s body has been moved to a local morgue for autopsy and preservation, standard procedure in such cases.

Magistrate Kivuti, alongside the injured member of the public, continues to receive medical attention as they recover from their injuries sustained during the chaotic incident.

As investigations proceed, security measures have been significantly heightened at the law courts, with the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) maintaining a visible presence to ensure the safety of all court personnel and visitors.

The incident has underscored the challenges faced in maintaining security and order within judicial settings, prompting a review of existing protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
