Mombasa Governor Defends Muguka Ban and Teases Further Actions Amidst Controversy: “What I Will Do Next Will Cause Tsunami”

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has justified his move to enforce a prohibition on the sale of Muguka in Mombasa, characterizing it as a political gamble he is willing to take despite potential criticism.

Asserting his stance, Nassir revealed plans for forthcoming impactful measures set to reverberate across the nation, indicating his decision was grounded in existing legislation.

In a dialogue with Spice FM, Abdulswamad hinted at future actions of greater magnitude, stating that his current initiatives, albeit controversial, are only the beginning of substantial changes.

The governor has initiated correspondence with the Ministries of Interior and Health, urging Muguka farmers to explore alternative crops, emphasizing the detrimental effects of Muguka on youth.

Nassir’s remarks followed a meeting between President William Ruto and leaders from Muguka-producing regions in response to the bans imposed by Mombasa, Taita Taveta, and Kilifi counties.

President Ruto disclosed discussions with Governor Abdulswamad and his counterparts regarding the bans, inviting them to engage in a national dialogue facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to address Muguka-related challenges.

Nassir teased forthcoming stringent policies aimed at restoring order, implying they would impact influential figures, underscoring his resolve against intimidation.

While remaining discreet about specific actions, Nassir affirmed his commitment to enforcing further measures aimed at addressing societal issues caused by Muguka.

Expressing satisfaction with efforts from Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire to negotiate for Muguka traders, Nassir cited disrespect from traders towards authorities as a motivating factor behind the ban.

The governor attributed the decision to societal concerns and referenced existing bans in other regions, asserting that Muguka sales contribute to significant societal issues.

Nassir alleged that Muguka is being peddled to vulnerable demographics, including children and individuals with mental health challenges.
