Deadly Floods Claim 9 More Lives, Death Toll Hits 228- Mwaura
Over the past 24 hours, nine people have lost their lives due to flood-related incidents, raising the national death toll to 228.
Isaac Mwaura, a government spokesperson, stated that ongoing flooding has injured 164 people and left 72 others missing.
On Sunday, Mwaura reported that around 212,630 individuals from 42,526 households have been displaced.
In total, floods have impacted 223,198 individuals nationwide.
“The government extends sincere condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones,” Mwaura expressed.
Following the Mai Mahiu flood tragedy, two more bodies were discovered on Saturday, bringing the death toll there to 58, according to police reports.
A report from the Mai Mahiu police station indicated that the multi-agency team found the bodies of an adult male and a child.
Mwaura mentioned that Homa Bay, Kajiado, Nakuru, Mandera, and Nairobi counties are the most severely affected by the current heavy rains that have caused severe flooding.
The government continues to implement a 24-hour evacuation notice issued on May 2.
Additionally, the government is providing logistical assistance, including alternate accommodations and essential supplies, to those impacted.

Mwaura explained that a multi-agency team is handling evacuations in riparian areas, moving 163,210 residents either voluntarily or forcibly.
He reassured Kenyans that national game parks and reserves remain safe and largely accessible despite the ongoing floods.
“The situation in Maasai Mara should not raise concerns as only two tented camps along the Talek River have been washed away, with no casualties among tourists or employees,” he noted.
“The affected tourists and employees were evacuated and are safe. Only a few roads in Mara have been impacted, but the park remains largely accessible.”
He advised tourists to disregard travel warnings about visiting Kenya, stating the country is still safe for tourism.
Mwaura encouraged Kenyans to contribute to relief efforts through donations or volunteering.
He suggested that flood-related emergencies should be reported to the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) via the toll-free number 0800 721 571.
Mwaura also urged Kenya’s development partners and friends to offer support during this emergency period.
The government spokesperson expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for providing two planes filled with 80 tonnes of food and non-food supplies.
