Kindiki Directs Removal of All Police Roadblocks

Secretary of the Interior Cabinet Kithure Kindiki has ordered police officers to dismantle all roadblocks by November 1 at the latest.

Kindiki noted on Thursday, August 24 that the order is consistent with a previous directive issued by President William Ruto, who observed that the barricades had become corrupting conduits.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that the President had expressed concern over the millions of dollars lost by many motorists due to the bribes they are obliged to pay at roadblocks.

Kindiki stated, “The static roadblocks are less effective because people have found ways to circumvent them and evade police officers.”

According to the Cabinet Secretary, his ministry was deploying mobile patrols and surveillance technologies to address the country’s security challenges.

In addition, he instructed the officers who patrol the major highways to maintain a strict but courteous demeanor toward drivers.

Kindiki acknowledged the concerns expressed by motorists who accused the police of using roadblocks for personal gain and harassment.

At certain roadblocks, police officers are reportedly treating motorists with a great deal of courtesy. “We have received this report from elected leaders,” Kindiki stated.

The Cabinet Secretary noted that police officers may demand bribes at barriers for a variety of reasons. Some officers may do so due to their inherent corruption.

Others may do it because they require additional funds. Others may do it because they believe they are entitled to bribes as compensation for the risks they assume in their employment.

Kindiki cautioned, however, that regardless of the motive, the practice of police officers soliciting bribes is unlawful and detrimental.

It undermines the rule of law, erodes public confidence in law enforcement, and contributes to corruption and impunity.

Kindiki assured, “We have bolstered police oversight so that there are more checks and balances in place to prevent corruption.”
