6 Students Killed in Hit & Run Accident

Six children were tragically killed in a road accident on Friday morning at Wiitu shopping centre on the Kitui-Kibwezi road, Kitui County.

The deceased included three primary school students and three from secondary school, according to police reports.

Dr. Resila Onyango, spokesperson for the National Police Service, confirmed that five of the victims were girls.

The accident occurred around 6:20 am while the children were crossing the road on their way to school.

The victims were three students from Kyaoni Primary and three from Kyaoni Secondary.

“They died instantly, and the police are managing the situation,” Dr. Onyango stated.

Ikutha Deputy County Commissioner Vincent Lomachary reported that the children were struck by a Probox salon car while crossing the road.

Preliminary investigations suggest the car was speeding at the time of the collision.

He described the incident as tragic.

The driver of the car fled the scene but later turned himself in at Mutomo Police Station.

He was arrested, and the vehicle was impounded while investigations are ongoing, according to the police.

This accident is the latest in a series of such incidents in the country, amid increasing calls to tackle the issue.

Fatal road accidents have been on the rise despite ongoing efforts to curb the trend.

Approximately 4,000 people die annually in road accidents, with many more suffering injuries that negatively impact families.

Some accidents remain unresolved, but efforts are in place to address the issue.

The National Transport and Safety Authority identifies hit-and-runs, tyre bursts, and loss of vehicle control as major causes of fatal crashes.

Improper overtaking and failing to maintain the correct lane, leading to head-on collisions, are also significant contributing factors.
