27 Days Later: Parliament Approves 19 of President Ruto’s Cabinet Nominees Amidst National Unrest
27 days after President William Ruto dismissed all but one Cabinet Secretary, the political scene has undergone a major shift, with the National Assembly approving 19 out of 20 Cabinet nominees on Wednesday, August 7.
This development marks a new chapter for the country, which has been experiencing protests and unrest for over a month.
By assembling a diverse Cabinet, President Ruto aims to promote inclusivity and unity.
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah announced that the committee had approved 19 of President Ruto’s 20 nominees.
This pivotal move supports Ruto’s effort to establish a broad-based government, including five members from Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to bridge political gaps.
Stella Lang’at, who was nominated for the Gender Ministry, was the sole nominee to be rejected.
“Of the 21 nominees vetted, 20 were approved, and only Ms. Stella Soi Lang’at for the Ministry of Gender was rejected,” Ichung’wah reported.
The National Assembly largely supported the report, endorsing 19 Cabinet Secretaries while rejecting one, thereby clearing the way for the Cabinet’s reconstitution. The vote saw the dismissal of Stella Soi Lang’at’s nomination.
The vetting process was marked by active public engagement, with the committee receiving 837 submissions. Of these, 23 were hand-delivered and 714 were emailed.
