27 Days Later: Parliament Approves 19 of President Ruto’s Cabinet Nominees Amidst National Unrest

27 days after President William Ruto dismissed all but one Cabinet Secretary, the political scene has undergone a major shift, with the National Assembly approving 19 out of 20 Cabinet nominees on Wednesday, August 7.

This development marks a new chapter for the country, which has been experiencing protests and unrest for over a month.

By assembling a diverse Cabinet, President Ruto aims to promote inclusivity and unity.

Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah announced that the committee had approved 19 of President Ruto’s 20 nominees.

This pivotal move supports Ruto’s effort to establish a broad-based government, including five members from Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to bridge political gaps.

Stella Lang’at, who was nominated for the Gender Ministry, was the sole nominee to be rejected.

“Of the 21 nominees vetted, 20 were approved, and only Ms. Stella Soi Lang’at for the Ministry of Gender was rejected,” Ichung’wah reported.

The National Assembly largely supported the report, endorsing 19 Cabinet Secretaries while rejecting one, thereby clearing the way for the Cabinet’s reconstitution. The vote saw the dismissal of Stella Soi Lang’at’s nomination.

The vetting process was marked by active public engagement, with the committee receiving 837 submissions. Of these, 23 were hand-delivered and 714 were emailed.

Despite the high number, only 181 met legal standards, while 656 were non-compliant with affidavit requirements.

Ichung’wah expressed appreciation for the public’s involvement, emphasizing its significance.

“I want to thank the many Kenyans who sent in such a large number of memoranda. It shows that public participation was meaningful, not just a formality. Kenyans actively engaged in the process,” he said.

Several nominees were scrutinized due to their records, with 163 affidavits challenging the appointments of 10 individuals who had previously been dismissed from office.

Noteworthy appointments include Professor Kindiki Kithure as Cabinet Secretary for Interior, a key role for national security.

Dr. Deborah Barasa will head the Health Ministry, addressing ongoing health issues. Alice Wahome will oversee the Lands Ministry, and Julius Migos Ogamba will manage Education, reflecting the administration’s focus on crucial sectors.

Soipan Tuya’s appointment as Defence CS and Andrew Karanja’s as Agriculture CS are strategic placements in sectors essential for national stability and food security.

Aden Duale’s appointment as Environment CS and Eric Mureithi Mugaa’s as Water CS align with the administration’s sustainability objectives.

Infrastructure and digital transformation are prioritized with Davis Chirchir as Roads CS, Margaret Nyambura as ICT CS, and John Mbadi as Treasury CS.

Salim Mvurya, Rebecca Miano, and Opiyo Wandayi will lead Trade, Tourism, and Energy respectively, which are vital for economic growth.

This newly formed Cabinet, a mix of experienced politicians and fresh faces, is set to drive Kenya towards enhanced economic growth and social equity.

As the appointees prepare to take office, the nation looks forward to an administration responsive to its needs.

Kenyans are optimistic that this new Cabinet, with its diverse and dynamic members, will lead the country towards a more prosperous and united future.

This transformation represents a significant step in President Ruto’s vision for a progressive and inclusive Kenya.
