    Zubeida Kananu Elected Kenya Editors Guild President.

    Zubeida Kananu Elected Kenya Editors Guild President.

    The editors also elected Radio Africa Group digital Editor Francis Mureithi without opposition to the Online council.

    Saturday, the Kenya Editors Guild elected Zubeida Kananu of the Standard Media Group as guild president.

    Before she was elected president of the Kenya Editors Guild, Kananu served as vice president of the guild; Ruth Nesoba of the BBC now holds that position.

    Zubeida received 72 votes to defeat Sammy Muraya of Journalists for Human Rights, who received 36.

    There were 110 participants in the election.

    Tom Onyango, the Returning Officer, announced the winner at Nairobi Club. Kananui will succeed Churchill Otieno.

    Kananu’s response to the victory was that she was ecstatic about the new position.

    “I cannot find the words to express my happiness. When I joined, EC Churchill took my hand and introduced us as colleagues. “I pledge to serve you all, and I promise not to let you down,” said Kananu.

    She thanked everyone for believing in her and stated that the media must ensure the safety and security of journalists because so much is happening.

    “We will take care of our journalists on the ground, even during demonstrations,” she stated.

    Ruth received 73 votes, while her competitor from People Daily, James Ng’ang’a Mbugua, received 35.

    The editors also elected Radio Africa Group digital Editor Francis Mureithi without opposition to the Online council.

    Typical Media Group Linda Bach retained her position as a Print Council Member.
