Woman Narrates Last Moments of Kenyan Widow Who Died in Canada Days After Arriving
A close acquaintance of Delphina Wambui Ngigi, a woman who passed away in Canada, has disclosed the challenges the mother of four encountered before her trip to Canada and the difficulties she faced upon moving to the North American country before her death.
Wambui, a widow, passed away on February 18, just a few days after she had applied for asylum in a foreign country.
In the interview, the woman shared that Wambui passed away while waiting in the chilly conditions outside a shelter facility.
As per the woman interviewed by KDTV on Monday, Wambui opted to move to Canada in February 2024 due to the loss of both her job and her father. During that period, her motivation was to provide her children with an improved quality of life.
With the objective in mind, she submitted a Visa application, and it was approved. Subsequently, she commenced her trip preparations, which involved securing tickets and acquiring appropriate attire for the chilly Canadian climate.
In the interview, it was disclosed that Wambui had intended to embark on her journey on February 9. However, she encountered a setback at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) where she was denied entry. The reason provided was that she was not permitted to travel to Canada via Europe.
She faced rejection once more before finally achieving success on her third try.
“She was not given a reason why she could not go to Canada through Europe. When she arrived the next day, she was supposed to go to the shelter but I was not available to take her there” the friend stated.
Upon her arrival, Wambui visited her friend’s residence and prepared to head to the shelter the following day. Accompanied by her friend, she was taken to the shelter as mandated, and her friend departed with the hope that Wambui would adjust smoothly.

In the interim, the individual who had passed away was requested to wait outdoors at the shelter with two others, enabling the shelter staff to make space in the consistently crowded facility. Adhering to the request, she remained outside for several hours before being directed to the reception area.
“I asked her to be patient since it was her only option for getting help. It is a must for her to go through the shelter since she came as a refugee,” the friend stated.
This indicated that Wambui’s aspirations for starting afresh in the North American nation were on track.
Significantly, Wambui maintained regular contact with her friend during her stay at the shelter. Additionally, it is reported that she kept in touch with her children.
During their recent discussion, Wambui’s friend suggested that she inquire about a place to freshen up at the shelter.
As per the acquaintance, she received a belated phone call informing her of Wambui’s passing. She conveyed the news to Wambui’s family and emphasized that Wambui’s children were particularly impacted by her death.
“I was told one ambulance came and the medics attempted to conduct CPR. She was later ferried to the hospital in an ambulance. It is not clear whether she died in the ambulance or the hospital,” the lady added.
At present, loved ones and relatives are working to gather Ksh5.8 million (USD40,000) for the repatriation of her remains to Kenya. Thus far, Ksh595,300 has been collected in support of this endeavor.
