Woman Found Dead Inside Shop After Losing Ksh60,000 Bet

A small-scale businesswoman in Kakamega County reportedly died by suicide on Tuesday after losing Ksh60,000 in gambling.

The Kambiri area chief, speaking to the press after the incident, stated that the woman’s body was found in her shop located in Kakamega town.

One of the deceased’s customers described the unsettling situation, noting that the businesswoman seemed visibly disturbed while serving her, which raised her curiosity.

“I visited her shop, and everything appeared fine as we had a pleasant conversation. We then moved further into the shop, but shortly after, I discovered she had taken her own life,” recounted the customer.

Another witness claimed that the businesswoman frequently engaged in gambling, losing Ksh60,000, but never spoke up about it, which ultimately led to the tragic outcome.

“She gambled on her phone repeatedly, losing Ksh60,000. Unfortunately, she kept it to herself, which led to this unfortunate incident,” said the witness.

Meanwhile, the area chief urged residents to speak up when facing challenges to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The chief also mentioned that, following the woman’s death, police had launched an investigation, and her body was taken to the mortuary for postmortem examination.

“I want to urge Kambiri residents, if they have any issues, to seek help and share their problems. Don’t hesitate to talk to your neighbor,” said the chief.

“We’re still waiting on more details as the investigation is ongoing, but we expect more clarity soon.”

A similar incident occurred three months ago when a high school teacher in Nyamira County took his own life after losing an unspecified amount of money to gambling.

The teacher was found dead in his home after missing multiple classes. A police report revealed that his body was discovered hanging from the rooftop.

“We tried to reach him all day, but he was unavailable,” recalled a colleague.
