Wiper MCA Abanas Wambua Resurfaces After Abduction; Wiper Party Demands Accountability

Wiper Democratic Movement’s Nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Abanas Wambua resurfaced on Monday, July 8, after being missing for several days.

Media reports indicated that Wambua reappeared at a hospital in Makindu, where he was undergoing treatment following his alleged release.

Wambua recounted that on Saturday, a group of men identifying themselves as police officers from Embu approached him.

This incident, which took place in Makindu, was witnessed by several residents. They reported seeing the MCA being forcibly taken from the initial encounter site by the supposed officers.

He was then forced into a car that quickly sped off towards an unknown location in Mombasa County.

Wambua, speaking to the media after his release, stated that the officers claimed they were targeting individuals inciting anti-government protests. He maintained his innocence, pleading for his release.

His release occurred just hours after the Wiper Party issued an ultimatum to the Inspector General of Police, calling the MCA’s abduction a serious rights violation.

“We demand that Hon Wambua be released immediately and returned to his family in Makindu, Makueni County. We also demand that the government immediately end these illegal actions and release all others who have been arbitrarily arrested,” the letter read.

Additionally, the WDM’s demand letter held the Inspector General personally accountable for Wambua’s safety and well-being. Meanwhile, in a separate abduction case, a protestor was found dead with his body dumped in a quarry.

Denzel Omondi, a student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, mysteriously went missing and was among the protestors who marched to Parliament on June 25, 2024.
