Why Lawyer Ndegwa Njiiru Has Retracted His Statement on Matiang’i, Issues Public Apology
Prominent lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has made a sudden U-turn on his earlier remarks about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangโi, offering an unconditional apology and retraction.
In a statement on Tuesday, August 19, Njiru clarified his position after controversial comments he made on Kameme TV sparked tension within the opposition. He admitted that his words had been misinterpreted and risked creating unnecessary division in the coalition.
Njiru explained that his earlier comments were influenced by recent political changes within Gusii community leadership.
โI acknowledge that my statement this morning on Kameme TV caused unnecessary alarm and was wrongly taken to mean the United Opposition is no longer united,โ he said.
The lawyer revealed that he had personally spoken to Matiangโi, who assured him of his firm commitment to the opposition.
โI have spoken to our brother Fred Matiangโi, and he has assured me confidentially that he remains solidly in opposition. For the sake of unity and to keep the WANTAM movement strong, I hereby withdraw my statement unconditionally,โ Njiru added.
He went on to apologize to Matiangโi, stressing that the opposition remains united and intact.
โI sincerely apologize to my brother Fred Matiangโi for any misunderstanding my words may have caused. There is no bad blood between us,โ Njiru concluded.

The retraction followed Njiruโs earlier accusations during his Kameme TV interview, where he had questioned Matiangโiโs loyalty, even alleging that the former CS was a โgovernment project.โ

โMatiangโi is a state project. Gen Z said they were party-less, leader-less, but suddenly they started hyping Matiangโi. He is an NIS project,โ Njiru had claimed during the live show.
He also raised doubts about Matiangโiโs participation in opposition activities, accusing him of avoiding joint political rallies.
โWhen we toured the country, we didnโt go to Kisii because Matiangโi said he wasnโt ready to return home. He didnโt join us in Narok either. Later, when he came back from the USA, he went to Meru instead of Kisii and didnโt even inform us,โ Njiru had said.
The controversy deepened after former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua was seen engaging with Matiangโi during a recent trip to the US, sparking speculation of a political alliance.
However, Gachagua dismissed the rumors, stating that their meeting focused on national issues.
โWe discussed several challenges facing Kenyans and our ongoing liberation struggle. Our dedication to the people of Kenya remains strong,โ Gachagua explained.
