Why I Was Happy Court Stopped Housing Levy – Wamuchomba
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba expressed her joy upon learning that the Court of Appeal had halted Housing Levy deductions.
On Monday, Wamuchomba expressed that after the court’s ruling, she believed that the judiciary upheld the principles of truth.
The Member of Parliament observed that there was a sense that the judiciary played a role in safeguarding the Constitution of Kenya as well.
“I was one of the happiest people when I saw the Judiciary say no to House Tax. That day I was very happy. Do you know why? Because the Judiciary stood for the truth. The constitution of Kenya which we all swore to protect was defended,” she said on TV47.
The legislator’s comments were made shortly after the Court of Appeal rejected a request to temporarily halt directives preventing the state from deducting a housing levy from the salaries of Kenyan workers.
Justices Lydia Achode, John Mativo, and Gatembu Kairu emphasized that it is in the public’s interest to await the resolution of the appeal.
“This is because if the stay sought is granted at the stage, should we affirm the challenged decision, then some far-reaching decisions that will have been undertaken under the challenged laws may not be reversible,” they said.
“Public interest in our view tilts favour of in not granting the stay or the suspension sought.”
The mandatory housing levy was previously ruled unconstitutional by the High Court.

From the beginning, Wamuchomba actively opposed the initiatives advocated by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
She maintains that the current administration’s policies lack consideration for the challenges faced by her constituents.
In January, the elected Member of Parliament, representing the United Democratic Alliance, asserted that she has no regrets for diverging from certain policies of Kenya Kwanza.
“I knew if I did agree with them then, there is a section of people that I represent which I felt were not going to be treated fairly,” Wamuchomba said adding that the decision was engineered by her socialization.
“When the Finance Bill came and I read it through, I felt that the Kenya Kwanza government was insensitive to the needs of the people that supported him, people who had my story, resonated with my story, and gave me votes.”
Wamuchomba expressed that her perspectives are largely shaped by her upbringing and educational background.
She mentioned that her background has a significant impact on her behavior and beliefs, extending beyond the typical political assumptions held by others.
