Went to US in 1987, Came Back Broke: Kenyan Man Claims He Lost Wealth to American Wife
In 1987, when Isaac Gichengo visited the United States, he could not have anticipated coming back empty-handed.
Gichengo asserted in an interview that his spouse had depleted his savings and retirement nest egg. During the conversation, he shared the story of his ascent from poverty to prosperity and eventual return to his initial financial state.
Upon his arrival in Pennsylvania, USA, Gichengo initially undertook various miscellaneous jobs before securing a position at a bank, where he progressed through the ranks.
He ultimately married an American citizen, and together they had two children who enjoyed a life of luxury, experiencing all the things Gichengo missed out on during his own childhood.
“I was going through a lot of emotional abuse and to all the men out there going through the same, decide to leave and never look back,” he stated, during an interview with KDTV on Monday.
As per the ex-banker, he funded his wife’s education in accounting by working two jobs to cover the tuition fees.
Nevertheless, the Gichengo household faced challenges as reports indicated that his wife was living extravagantly, purchasing costly items for their children.
The individual from Kenya, who accused his wife and her family of mishandling his finances leading up to their divorce, asserted that his efforts to resist his wife’s extravagant way of living were ultimately ineffective.
Gichengo asserted that his spouse, along with her grandparents, had effectively collaborated to influence the children against him. However, these accusations lack independent verifiable evidence.
In the legal proceedings, the man was mandated to provide approximately $1,000 per month in spousal support, leaving him with limited funds for his own personal expenses.

“We had a hearing in less than a month, and the judge ruled that I have to pay alimony and child support. They took my paycheck and I was left with nothing, I had to move,’ he stated.
The man’s financial troubles were exacerbated as his wife moved money from their shared account to her individual one.
In the course of the divorce proceedings, it is claimed that his financial assets were restricted, and there was a near loss of his passport. Gichengo had to go back home because of financial limitations.
Fortunately, by the end of 2023, the court dismissed the instruction compelling him to provide alimony to his spouse.
“When I came here, I dug a borehole in a piece of land I own in Kijabe. The contractor, however, misused Ksh2 million without completing the project,” he stated.
The individual from Kenya is presently residing with a friend while he works on rebuilding his life. Additionally, his family has shown support by providing financial assistance to help cover his day-to-day expenses.
Gichengo is optimistic about the prospect of resuming work in the United States, as they have scheduled six interviews for positions abroad.
