Anne Waiguru, the Governor of Kirinyaga, has threatened to prosecute Jane Njeri Maina, her Woman Representative, who was beaten by thugs at a rally in Kerugoya town on Tuesday, August 22.

Waiguru demanded in a demand letter drafted by her attorney that the MP retract the allegedly defamatory statements she made against her. Maina was accused of claiming on her social media accounts that the governor paid the youth to attack her.

The letter drafted by V. A. Nyamodi & Co. Advocates stated in part, “Our further instructions are to demand that you immediately cease from your unwarranted defamation of our client on any medium, including your social media pages.”

Waiguru also demanded that Maina publish an immediate, unqualified apology in the same medium used to defame her.

“Furthermore, you should publish an appropriate apology in a national newspaper.” Paul Nyamodi, the client’s attorney, demanded that you remove the offensive posts from your Facebook page, which is accessible to the general public.

Waiguru noted that the statements, which seemed to imply that she was after the life of the 28-year-old member of parliament, harmed her reputation in the minds of reasonable members of society.

“Our Client is the Governor of Kirinyaga County and President of the Council of Governors. She is held in high regard by the general populace.

The letter to Njeri Maina stated in part, “Your irresponsibility has harmed and continues to harm our client’s image and reputation.”

Therefore, Waiguru requested that Maina also admit liability, noting that her attorney will shortly consult with her regarding the amount of damages and costs resulting from the liability.

“Take notice that if you do not comply with our demand within seven (7) days of the date of this notice, we have firm and mandatory instructions to initiate legal proceedings against you without further reference to you at your own risk as to costs and other consequences,” Nyamodi warned.

On her X, formerly Twitter account, Waiguru reiterated that she would not allow unsubstantiated accusations against her to distract her.

“We are too occupied serving our citizens to engage in frivolous transactions. However, unsubstantiated and frivolous accusations that constitute criminal libel will result in severe legal consequences. This nation is regulated by the rule of law, according to Waiguru.

Waiguru is still awaiting a response from Njeri Maina, who was evacuated to Nairobi Hospital for a minor operation before being transported back to Kerugoya Level V Hospital for admission.

However, in a statement documented with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Kerugoya, the 28-year-old Woman Representative continued to accuse Waiguru of threatening her life.
