US Warns Its Citizens in Latest Security Alert for Kenya

The United States government has issued a travel advisory for Kenya, advising its citizens to avoid certain areas of Nairobi due to heightened security risks.

In a statement released on Friday, the US Embassy cautioned Americans against traveling to locations frequented by US citizens and other expatriates in Nairobi and other parts of Kenya.

Nairobi remains an attractive target for terrorists plotting imminent attacks, the embassy warned.

It also advised its citizens to remain vigilant in tourist/foreigner-heavy areas, assess their security plans, and be aware of their surroundings.

“Locations frequented by U.S. citizens and other foreigners and tourists in Nairobi and elsewhere in Kenya continue to be attractive targets to terrorists planning to conduct potentially imminent attacks.

“Terrorist groups could attack with little or no warning, targeting hotels, embassies, restaurants, malls and markets, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other places frequented by foreigners and tourists,” the statement read.

In addition, they were instructed to monitor local media for updates, avoid protest zones and demonstrations, avoid masses, and maintain a low profile.

Additionally, the embassy provided phone numbers for its citizens to contact for assistance in the event of a problem.ย

In light of the violence between Israel and Palestine, which has resulted in the deaths of thousands over the past week, the alert has been issued.

Hamas, a Palestine militia group, launched a series of attacks on the premise that Israel was illegally occupying Palestinian territory.

This prompted a Middle Eastern nation to retaliate and initiate attacks against Palestine, resulting in hundreds of deaths. In response to the assaults, other nations have expressed differing perspectives on the matter.

President William Ruto stated support of Israel, describing the violence as terrorism.

“Kenya joins the rest of the world in solidarity with the State of Israel and unequivocally condemns terrorism and attacks on innocent civilians in the country,” Ruto stated on October 9, 2023.

Other nations, such as the United Kingdom and the United States, concurred with Ruto’s condemnation of the militia group.

In contrast, other African nations, such as Algeria and Tunisia, demonstrated their support for Palestine.ย
