US Sends Top Govt Official to Kenya After Charged Protests
Uzra Zeya, the US Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, will undertake a crucial visit to Nairobi and Addis Ababa from August 4 to 8, 2024.
This trip is particularly timely, given the escalating unrest and human rights issues currently affecting the region.
During her visit, Zeya will focus on Kenya’s escalating crisis, which has resulted in over 60 deaths since June 2024, according to the Kenya National Human Rights Commission (KNHCR).
Most of these deaths are linked to claims of police brutality, with security forces accused of using excessive force and live ammunition against protesters. This turmoil has sparked widespread protests against President William Ruto’s Finance Bill 2024 and increased demands for accountability.
In Nairobi, Zeya will meet with top Kenyan officials, civil society leaders, and alumni of US exchange programs.
Her goal is to strengthen the 60-year partnership between Kenya and the United States, concentrating on improving the rule of law, fighting corruption, and enhancing transparency in governance.
The visit underscores a commitment to democratic principles and human rights, which are currently under pressure due to the ongoing crisis.
Zeya’s agenda will also focus on the fundamental rights to peaceful assembly and free expression.

Her talks will emphasize the US’s steadfast support for democratic reforms and the integration of refugees, showcasing a dedication to upholding human rights amidst growing challenges.
Ethiopia will also be a significant part of Zeya’s trip. She will hold discussions with Ethiopian government officials, representatives from the African Union, and various civil society organizations.
The visit will center on protecting human rights and promoting inclusive, transparent justice processes. Zeya’s trip is timely as Ethiopia faces its own human rights challenges and complex humanitarian issues.
A key component of Zeya’s visit to Ethiopia will be her tour of a refugee center, which provides essential services such as child protection, education, and healthcare.
This visit aims to highlight the US’s role as the largest donor of humanitarian aid to Ethiopia and to strengthen partnerships that support both refugees and their host communities.
The timing of Zeya’s visit is crucial, as both Kenya and Ethiopia are at pivotal points in their political and humanitarian situations. The outcomes of these discussions could significantly impact regional stability and international human rights commitments.
