A US senator has broken the record for the longest speech in Senate history, speaking for more than 25 hours in protest against former President Donald Trump’s actions.
Cory Booker’s Historic Speech
Senator Cory Booker spoke for 25 hours and 5 minutes, surpassing the previous record set by Strom Thurmond, who spoke for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil Rights Act of 1957. Booker, who is one of the few Black senators in US history, called Thurmond’s record “irritating” because it was used to block civil rights progress.
A Powerful Stand Against Trump
Booker criticized Trump’s policies, which he claimed were harming democracy and putting Americans at risk. He specifically attacked Trump’s budget cuts and the influence of billionaire Elon Musk in government decisions.
“This is a moral moment. It’s not about left or right—it’s about right or wrong,” Booker said. He also quoted civil rights leader John Lewis, encouraging people to engage in “good trouble.”
The Challenges of a 25-Hour Speech
During his marathon speech, Booker could not sit down or leave the floor—not even for a bathroom break. He prepared by stopping eating and drinking before the speech. “Different muscle groups start to cramp up,” he admitted afterward.
Democrats Rally, Republicans Stay Away
As Booker approached the record, Democratic senators gathered to support him. However, most Republican lawmakers stayed away. Senator Raphael Warnock praised Booker, saying, “Thank you for holding vigil for this country all night.”
Ending with Hope
Despite exhaustion, Booker ended his speech with a message of hope: “The power of the people is greater than the people in power.”
His speech became a rallying cry for Democrats, who continue to fight against policies they believe threaten democracy.
