President Joe Biden praised President William Ruto’s decision to send police officers to Haiti to assist and train the Caribbean nation’s law enforcement in their efforts to restore stability to the troubled nation.

Biden praised Ruto during the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly for accepting a request to restore peace in a country at war since 2021.

“We embrace nations stepping up to lead new ways and to seek breakthroughs on hard issues,” Biden remarked.

“For example in Haiti, the Caribbean communities facilitated a dialogue among Haitian society. I thank President William Ruto of Kenya for his willingness to serve as the lead nation of a UN-backed security support system.”

Nonetheless, the President of the United States urged the Kenyan police not to use brutal force against civilians and to uphold a nonviolent mission in dealing with the violence in the country.

He also urged the United Nations Security Council to continue bolstering the Caribbean nation’s security. He stated that the Haitian population could no longer wait for UN intervention.

In 2021, following the assassination of former President Jovenel Moise, violence broke out in the country. This has led to an increase in crime and unrest.

According to reports, criminal organizations control over eighty percent of the capital.

Violent crimes such as kidnappings for ransom, carjackings, and armed robberies have been on the increase as gangs fight for a living.

Ariel Henry, who succeeded Moise as prime minister, has been attempting to control the violence.

In addition to humanitarian, political, and security crises, the country has been beset by a feeble government and overburdened security forces.

By providing training and support to the Haitian National Police, the deployment of United States police officers could assist in addressing some of these challenges.
