US Embassy in Nairobi Warns of Possible Attack Targeting Key Facility

The Nairobi-based American Embassy has cautioned about a potential terrorist strike targeting Somalia’s Aden Adde International Airport.

This facility plays a crucial role in the East Africa area, serving as the headquarters for the African Union Mission in Somalia, where troops from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are stationed.

The US embassy suggests that there is a possibility that terrorists might target additional vital installations within the East African Community (EAC) nation with bombings.

โ€œAll movements of U.S. Embassy personnel have been canceled for Tuesday, April 9, 2024,โ€ the embassy was quoted as saying.

โ€œThe U.S. Department of State level-four travel advisory (โ€œdo not travelโ€) for Somalia remains in effect due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health issues, kidnapping, and piracy.โ€

The identities of those potentially responsible for the terrorist attacks were not disclosed right away.

However, there were worries that the intended attacks might have been orchestrated by the Al Shabaab terrorist organization.

Somalia hosts tens of thousands of Kenyan individuals employed across various sectors including corporate, aid, service, and hospitality industries.

Furthermore, Kenya accommodates hundreds of thousands of Somali refugees who have escaped their homeland due to the menace posed by Al Shabaab.

The terrorist organization Al Shabaab has carried out numerous acts of terrorism within Kenya’s borders.

The most recent alert about a potential attack coincided with the request from the Federal Government of Somalia for the African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to withdraw.

In October 2023, Kenya pledged to pull out its KDF troops deployed with ATMIS by the conclusion of 2024.
