Unveiling Fuel Station Fraud: Drivers Share Experiences, Expert Analysis
Sunday, June 18th, motorists questioned why they ended up making more trips to certain gas stations to refuel their vehicles, causing them to spend more money during the specified period.
Some questioned why they had spent less at other gas stations during the same time frame.
The consensus was that improperly maintained vehicles would consume up to 30 percent more fuel.
Critics, however, suspected that certain gas stations were exploiting motorists by selling adulterated fuel at the pump.
“Who has observed that you lose 1.7 kilometers per liter when refueling at (name withheld) as opposed to other stations? Are they adding something that reduces the fuel’s efficiency?” A driver named Clever Jay questioned.
“I’ve observed that for every Ksh1,000 spent on fuel at a particular shell station in Nakuru County, I get an additional 10 kilometers.
“The gas station along State House Road that I frequent daily is the best. When I fill up my Nissan Note with Ksh8,200 worth of fuel, it travels 650 kilometers. I refueled at a different station and my tank was below half, covering only 280 kilometers,” motorists complained.

Others, however, pointed out that the analogy would only be applicable if all variables remained constant.
“It is extremely difficult to determine (usage rate) unless you fill up a full tank at one particular gas station, record the liters used, reset your trip meter to zero, and drive until the fuel runs out. Indicate the total distance traveled, then compute the Km/L. “To determine the difference, repeat the procedure with a different service station,” Tom Goko stated.
Miller Kyalo, a car dealer and industry expert, addressed GossipA2Z and dismissed claims of fuel adulteration. He added that the government had enacted regulations to keep gas stations in check.
“I had the same suspicions, but in all candor, I believe they’re being paranoid. The Kenyan government has rigorous systems to detect fuel adulteration.
Additionally, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and weights and measures keep our gas stations in check. Businesses found to have tampered with the metering system or adulterated fuel are subject to hefty fines, he noted.
In addition, Kyalo mentioned that gas stations collected fuel from a single source that was subject to a stringent protocol before distribution.
“Fuel in Kenya is purchased or imported in bulk, then transported from Mombasa via pipeline, and finally distributed and collected by gas stations from the deport, so we are essentially drinking from the same cup,” he explained.
In March 2023, several motorists reported falling victim to fraudulent gas stations that sold small quantities of fuel at the standard price. This meant that the gasoline stations dispensed only 800 ml of fuel per liter at the standard price.
