University of Nairobi Student Leaders Call for Nationwide Protests Over Controversial Funding Model

Amid widespread public discontent over the newly introduced university funding model, student leaders at the University of Nairobi (UoN) announced on Saturday plans for nationwide protests to oppose its implementation.

Addressing the media on Saturday at noon, UoN student leaders urged students from universities nationwide to join their protest, scheduled to begin on Monday, September 2.

Voicing their disapproval of the new funding model, the students labeled it discriminatory, arguing that it restricts access to university education for many Kenyans.

UoN student leaders emphasized that their attempts to engage the government on the issue have been unsuccessful, leaving them with no choice but to organize nationwide demonstrations.

โ€œOne student leader highlighted that the public is suffering due to being wrongly categorized and forced to pay exorbitant fees,โ€ another leader stated.

“Itโ€™s crucial for the government to heed our call. We urge students from all universities, especially those at UoN, to rally together on August 2.”

This development comes after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos assured students that the government is actively working to address their concerns.

On August 23, the Ministry of Education announced that approximately 10,000 students have filed appeals through the Higher Education Financing (HEF) portal to challenge the new university funding model.

Godfrey Monari, CEO of the Universities Fund, confirmed that the review process has begun, with students expected to receive updates on their appeals within three weeks of submission.

โ€œWeโ€™ve received over 10,000 appeals, and the process is ongoing. Our goal is to correctly place these deserving students in the appropriate funding bands,โ€ Monari explained.

โ€œAfter processing the appeals, weโ€™ll instruct universities to adjust the household fees for affected students. This information will also be posted on the HEF portal, with an SMS notification sent to the students,โ€ he added.

Monari also mentioned that the Ministry is considering involving National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) to verify the authenticity and accuracy of the appeal cases.
