UK Bans TikTok on Gov Phones over Security Concerns

The United Kingdom announced on Thursday that it would immediately prohibit the use of the Chinese-owned video app TikTok on government-issued mobile devices, joining other Western nations in banning the app over security concerns.

Fears that user data from the app owned by Beijing-based company ByteDance could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, undermining Western security interests, have increased scrutiny on TikTok.

“The security of sensitive government data must take precedence, so we’re banning this app from government devices today. The use of other data-extracting applications will be monitored “Oliver Dowden, minister of the Cabinet Office, said in a statement.

The British government had requested that the National Cyber Security Centre investigate the vulnerability of government data from social media apps and the risks associated with how sensitive information could be accessed and utilized.

The United States, Canada, Belgium, and the European Commission have already prohibited the app from being installed on government-issued devices.

Dowden stated that restricting the use of TikTok on government-issued devices is a prudent and proportionate measure based on the advice of our cyber security experts.

TikTok stated that it was dissatisfied with the decision and had already begun taking additional measures to protect the data of European users.

A spokesperson for TikTok stated, “We believe these bans were based on fundamental misunderstandings and were driven by geopolitics in which TikTok and its millions of UK users have no part.”

China stated that the decision was based on political rather than factual considerations.

The move “interferes with the normal operations of relevant companies in the United Kingdom and will ultimately harm the United Kingdom’s interests,” the embassy said.

Dowden informed the legislature that government devices could now only access pre-approved third-party applications.

The TikTok ban does not apply to the personal devices of government employees or ministers, and there will be limited exemptions in cases where TikTok is required for work on government devices, he added.

Increasingly, British government departments and ministers use TikTok and other platforms to communicate with voters.

Energy Minister Grant Shapps stated that the ban on government-issued devices was reasonable, but he would remain on the platform using his device.

He uploaded a scene from the film “The Wolf of Wall Street” in which Leonardo DiCaprio’s character says, “I’m not f leaving” and “The show must go on.”

Shortly before the ban was announced, the British Ministry of Defense uploaded a video to the platform demonstrating how the British army trained Ukrainian forces to operate the Challenger 2 battle tank.
