Uhuru’s Advice: Bringing an End to Jubilee Chaos Post-Coup

Wambugu Ngunjiri, a former member of parliament (MP) from Nyeri Town, cited multiple causes for the chaos that rocked the Jubilee party on Sunday, May 7 and suggested that former president Uhuru Kenyatta could take action.

According to Ngunjiri, Uhuru had reached the pinnacle of his political career, as he had already served as head of state.

He stated that he needed to step down and allow others to lead the party to avoid public criticism.

“As far as I am concerned, Uhuru Kenyatta has retired. He may not be retired from politics, but I believe he should step aside when it comes to party leadership and allow others to run the party.

“As long as he is vying for control of the party, as it appears to be right now, even those who hold him in high regard, such as myself, will be compelled to criticize him,” he stated.

In addition, he stated that Uhuru might not be able to handle the necessary move required to ensure the party’s continued growth because he had already taken a side.

“The next step that Jubilee must take, I do not believe Uhuru Kenyatta is capable of taking,” He has already handed over peacefully to the new government.

“He had already taken the side of some party members who believe the results of the last election were tampered with,” he added.

Why the Jubilee is in Disarray

At Jubilee, there is a conflict between the past and the future.

One team at Jubilee, according to Ngunjiri, believes that the best course of action is to contest the most recent elections and delegitimize the current government, while another team has accepted the reality of having a government and is moving forward.

“There is a subset of party members who continue to believe that the August 2022 election results were erroneous and that ballots could indicate otherwise.

“There is a different group that has accepted the new reality even though they do not agree with it,” Ngunjiri explained.
Azimio does not include Jubilee MPS in meetings.

The former representative stated that Jubilee members were frequently excluded from coalition meetings and press conferences.

He noted that it was the members of parliament who represented a political party, and if the Jubilee MPs did not attend, it would indicate that they lacked unity.

“Every time I observe Jubilee conversing within Azimio, there are one or two members of parliament present. When I observe the opposing team conducting meetings, I observe over thirty members of parliament.

“We must determine who represents Jubilee to the general public,” he stated.

Azimio did not include Jubilee in bipartisan talks

Ngujiri also noted that members of the Jubilee party were absent from the list of representatives who would represent the Azimio coalition in the bipartisan talks.

He noted that this demonstrated that coalition members of Jubilee were not regarded as valuable assets.

“Azimio was incapable of nominating a single individual from Jubilee. “Azimio should have at least two Jubilee members out of seven,” stated Ngunjiri.

Coup Jubilé

Two factions are competing for control of the former ruling party. One was led by Jeremiah Kioni, while the other was led by Kanini Kega.

The former president is under siege after Kega’s faction replaced Uhuru Kenyatta as party leader with Sabina Chege.

Kega’s wing expelled David Murathe further.

In retaliation, Kioni terminated the memberships of Kega and Chege, thereby exacerbating the rifts within the former superpower party.

Speaker Moses Wetangula granted Azimio 30 days. Before they can seek to replace Chege as the coalition’s deputy whip, granting Chege a reprieve in the House.
