Uhuru Kenyatta Reacts to Ouster, Sabina Chege Takes Over as Party Leader
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta moved to defend his position as Jubilee Chair on Tuesday, May 2, mere hours after his controversial removal.
In a statement to the press, the faction led by secretary general Jeremiah Kioni disclosed that it did not recognize a previous decision by the faction led by Kanini Kega to replace the former Head of State with Nominated Member of Parliament Sabina Chege.
The statement emphasized that the removal did not adhere to the party’s constitution, so Uhuru remained Jubilee Party chairman.

A portion of the statement read, “The Jubilee Party Constitution does not foresee a situation in which a rebel group could remove a party leader from office.”
Concerning whether Uhuru would accept expulsion from the party. The statement stated, “The rebel group’s clandestine meetings, minutes, and resolutions are null and void.”
Uhuru and his team revealed that the rebel group that ousted him as leader of the Jubilee Party did so with government approval.
“State House is commandeering the rebel group in blatant disregard for multiparty democracy,” the party complained.

Jubilee added that the government’s interference in its internal affairs demonstrated Ruto’s lack of sincerity. In the bipartisan talks between the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions.
Kanini Kega, an East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) member, communicated the decision to remove Uhuru from office.
“The National Executive Committee (NEC) has decided that Sabina will serve as acting party leader until we convene a National Delegates Convention (NDC) where we will select the leader who will run the party in the future,” Kanini Kega said at the time.
He added that Uhuru’s earlier call for an NDC meeting on May 22 was invalid.
“Constitutionally, a retired president should not be involved in politics for six months after leaving office.

“According to the Constitution, the statement he delegated regarding the meeting convention is null and void,” Kega remarked.
Uhuru convened an NDC on 22 May to review, formulate, and approve Jubilee party policies and to receive an update from the National Executive Committee.
