Ugandan President Museveni Contracts COVID-19, Nation on Alert

Yoweri Museveni, president of Uganda, has tested positive for COVID-19, is in good health, and will continue his duties while receiving treatment, according to a senior health ministry official speaking late Wednesday.

Todayโ€ฆthe President tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. This occurred following the onset of mild flu-like symptoms. However, he is in good health and continues to carry out his duties normally while adhering to SOPs,” Diane Atwine, permanent secretary of the health ministry, said via Twitter, referring to standard operating procedures for handling COVID cases.

Museveni, 78, gave the first indication that he may have contracted COVID on Wednesday, shortly after delivering the State of the Nation address on the grounds of the parliament. He stated that he had felt a slight cold in the morning, prompting him to request COVID tests.

Two of the three tests he had performed were negative, and he was awaiting the results of the third.

“I am currently a suspect for Corona, and I am standing here. This is why you saw me coming to parliament in separate cars with Mama,” Museveni explained, referring to the First Lady Janet Museveni, who accompanied him.

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Uganda implemented some of the most stringent containment measures in Africa, including curfews, business and school closures, and the closure of borders, among other measures.

It reopened in full in February 2022.

During the pandemic, Museveni, who is vaccinated against COVID, was always seen in public wearing a mask, has always conducted his official duties while socially distancing, and was frequently observed seated alone in a tent on the lawn of his office when meeting with visitors.
