U.S Supports Kenya-Led Peace Mission in Haiti to Fight Gang Violence
April 14, 2025 โ The United States government has officially announced its strong support for the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) in Haiti, aimed at restoring peace and order in the country.
In a statement, U.S. Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce said the U.S. fully backs the missionโs efforts to fight criminal gangs and help Haiti recover from ongoing violence and instability.
โThe United States supports the efforts by the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission and CARICOM to assist the government in its efforts to bring peace and stability to Haiti,โ said Bruce.
U.S. Working with Regional Partners
The U.S. also confirmed that it is working closely with CARICOM and other governments in the region to help Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council maintain peace.
โWe support the statement by CARICOM condemning any actions to destabilize Haitiโs Transitional Presidential Council,โ added Bruce.
Haitiโs Transitional Government in Focus
Haitiโs Transitional Presidential Council, currently led by Leslie Voltaire, was formed in October 2024. The council works together with Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime and is in charge of preparing for general elections scheduled for February 2026.
Kenya Leads Peacekeeping Efforts in Haiti
Kenya has taken a leadership role by sending over 800 police officers to help restore peace in gang-controlled areas of Haiti. Other countries including Guatemala, El Salvador, Jamaica, and Belize have also joined the peace mission.
However, the mission has not been without loss.
- On February 23, Kenyan police officer Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was killed during a gunfight with gangs in Savien, Haiti.
- On March 25, officer Bรฉnรฉdict Kabiru was killed in an ambush in Pont-Sondรฉ, in the Artibonite region.
- Two other officers have been injured and are now recovering.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen spoke about the situation:
โWe lost an officer, and we feel very sad. One officer is still missing, but we are continuing the search. Two injured officers are doing well and are being treated,โ he said.
