TV Host Larry Madowo’s Swift Act: Funds Motorist to Rush Injured Man to Hospital

Larry Madowo, a CNN journalist, rescued a construction worker who was allegedly shot by police during Azimio la Umoja demonstrations in Nairobi’s Kamukunji neighborhood.

On Thursday, July 20, Madowo recalled encountering a victim who was profusely bleeding and surrounded by a compassionate crowd who had raced to administer first aid.

According to his initial assessment, the victim had abdominal and waist wounds.

With no ambulances on site, Madowo hired a boda boda driver to transport the injured man to a nearby hospital for evaluation and admission.

He did not, however, disclose the amount he offered to save the man’s life.

The injured construction worker was reportedly shot while consuming lunch a few minutes before returning to work. However, it was unclear whether he was struck by a live projectile, a rubber bullet, or a tear gas canister.

“I do not know if it was a teargas projectile or a gunshot. I was struck as I approached that corner (indicating the precise location). After that, I passed out,” he recalled.

The victim’s condition had not yet been determined at the time of publication.

Madowo maintained during CNN coverage that he witnessed police brutality despite government reports to the contrary.

“We have also witnessed protesters throwing objects at police officers,” he said.

As of July 2023, according to a report by Amnesty International, thirty fatalities were attributed to protests organized in 2023. The preponderance of fatalities resulted from gunshot wounds.

On Wednesday, July 19, the police were accused of impersonating journalists to arrest demonstrators. In the Kibra and Mathare neighborhoods, plainclothes officers were observed carrying firearms while walking the streets, raising concerns for the safety of protesters.

David Omwoyo, chief executive officer of the Media Council of Kenya, lamented that the police’s impersonation of journalists is a grievous unprofessional act that endangers the lives of journalists performing their duties.
