TSC Deregisters 65 Teachers, Permanently Bans Them From Classroom

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has made a strong move by removing and deregistering 65 teachers from its list because of undisclosed violations.

On Friday, April 20, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced the formal deregistration and removal of 23 teachers as of October 23, 2023, and 43 teachers as of March 8, 2024.

The choice comes after a detailed review of incidents involving these teachers.

TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia stated in an official announcement that the teachers were deemed guilty of the charges against them as per section 30(2) of the Teachers Service Commission Act of 2012.

Nevertheless, Macharia and the Commission did not reveal the specific charges.

The removal of these teachers from the register is by Section 30 of the Teachers Service Commission Act 2012, which specifies different reasons for deregistration.

These reasons involve securing registration through deceptive methods, being found guilty of sexual or criminal crimes, and being unable to perform due to physical or mental health issues.

The Act clearly outlines in Section 30(5) that when a teacherย is taken offย the register, they lose their teaching status from the date theyย are removed.

Additionally, the Commission’s directive is required for reentry into the register, guaranteeing strict compliance with professional standards.

Section 44(b) of the TSC Act underscores the gravity of misrepresentation by setting penalties for anyone who falsely pretends to be a registered teacher.

Individuals found guilty may face penalties of up to Ksh100,000, imprisonment, or both, highlighting the seriousness of this deception.

Additionally, the Act enforces sanctions for conducting teaching without proper registration, as well as forย hiring unregistered individuals in schools.ย These efforts strive to uphold the consistency and excellence of education across all areas.

The recent action by the TSC mirrors measures it took in past years. In 2022, more than 100 teachers had their registrations revoked due to various violations.

In 2023, a total of 73 teachers were dismissed for disciplinary reasons, and their identities and other relevant information were published in a Gazette Notice.

CEO Nancy Macharia emphasized that individuals removed from the register mustย halt their teaching duties right away.ย Significantly, 10ย of theย dismissed teachers also lost their positions on the Board of Management (BOM).
