Tragic Crash Claims Lives of 2 Nairobi Traffic Officers

Nairobi’s Rangwe Junction on the Lunga Lunga road was the scene of an accident involving three vehicles that claimed the lives of two traffic officers on Thursday.

According to a police report lodged at the Lunga Lunga police station, the incident occurred when a speeding Mazda struck a nearby forklift while officers were directing traffic at the Rangwe intersection.

A box traveling from Donholm to the House of Manji collided with a forklift turning onto Rangwe Road from the opposite direction.

The traffic officers, accompanied by two colleagues, rushed to the site of the accident to assist the victims.

The driver of a Mazda traveling from Donholm plowed into the scene minutes later and rammed two officers with a forklift.

As a consequence, the two officers perished on the scene, while their colleagues sustained injuries to the chest, waist, and head.

The injured officers were transported to the Nairobi West and Mama Lucy hospitals by first responders.

The deceased officers’ carcasses have been transported to Chiromo Mortuary, where they will undergo autopsy procedures.

This accident illustrates the escalating rate of road accidents in Kenya. Between January and June of 2023, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) recorded 2,124 fatalities due to motor vehicle accidents.

Pedestrians accounted for 330 of the total fatalities, followed by boda boda riders with 265 and passengers with 171.

According to the NTSA, the most common causes of accidents are excessive speeding, intoxicated driving, and reckless driving.
