Tim Wanyonyi Declares Bid for Nairobi Governor Seat in 2027
Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has declared his intention to run for the Nairobi governor seat in 2027.
Speaking on Tuesday, Wanyonyi affirmed his determination to contest for the governor position and emphasized that he will not step down this time.
Wanyonyi recalled that during the last general election, he aimed for the governor’s seat but had to step aside due to a coalition agreement between ODM and the Jubilee party.
“Last election, I launched my campaign for Nairobi governor here in this church. I remember discussing my candidacy with the pastors, who endorsed and blessed my campaign,” he said.
“However, I was later advised to run for the MP seat due to coalition considerations. This time, regardless of any coalition, my campaign will continue without retreat,” he added.
On May 1, 2022, Wanyonyi agreed not to pursue the governor seat because his party leader, Raila Odinga, was running for president under the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance.

As part of the deal, Azimio supported Polycarp Igathe, who ran on the Jubilee ticket but lost to the current governor, Johnson Sakaja of UDA.
Sakaja won the gubernatorial election with 699,392 votes, surpassing Igathe’s 573,516 votes.
Meanwhile, Wanyonyi easily retained his Westlands MP seat on the ODM ticket, securing 58,408 votes against his closest rival Nelson Havi’s 19,550 votes.
Wanyonyi’s political journey began in 2007 when he was elected as a councilor under the defunct Nairobi City Council.
He subsequently won the Westlands MP seat in the 2013 elections and successfully defended it in both the 2017 and 2022 general elections.
Wanyonyi, the younger brother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, expressed during his victory speech that his reelection reflected the confidence the electorate has in him.
“The people of Westlands have demonstrated their trust in my leadership. We have achieved much and there is still much more to accomplish,” Wanyonyi stated on August 12, 2022.
