Tick-Tock: MCAs Face Deadline in Governor Ole Lenku’s Impeachment Showdown

A committee comprising eleven members of the Kajiado County assembly has been granted a maximum of seven days to present a motion of impeachment against Joseph Ole Lenku, the county governor.

The MCAS was granted one week by Speaker Justus Ngossor to conduct an investigation into the governor and present a report to him.

Ngossor additionally advised the politicians against engaging in public discourse or sharing comments on the matter on any social media platform.

“Until verified, all distinguished members are instructed not to comment,” the county speaker issued.

Governor Ole Lenku of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) was charged with corruption, abuse of office, and providing employment opportunities to his allies and proxies.

Using the MCAs, a county employee presented the allegations.

Billy Muiruri, the spokesman for Kajiado County, verified the motion’s existence but argued that the governor had the complete support of the MCAs.

“The county employee is still earning a salary from the government and has not been fired contrary to reports,” Muiruri told Kenyans.co.ke.

Since the beginning of the year, the county has been embroiled in a power struggle, with Azimio MCAs threatening to impeach Speaker Justus Ngossur for blatantly aligning with UDA legislators and allegedly gross impartiality.

More than sixteen Azimio MCAs accused the Speaker of egregious lack of impartiality during House debates in February 2023.

Jeremiah Ole Ncharo, the Education CEC for Ole Lenku, narrowly escaped removal from office one month later. An irregular disbursement of bursaries, abuse of office, incompetence, and misuse of public resources were alleged against the CEC.

Twenty MCAs opposed the impeachment motion, which was supported by twenty-one MCAs.

Ole Lenku faces an imminent motion shortly after his Meru counterpart, Kawira Mwangaza, has successfully defended herself from her second impeachment.

The Senate rejected her removal, with the majority voting against all seven charges brought against her.

“The result of the division indicates that the Senate has not upheld any of the impeachment charges. The Senate has failed to remove from office by impeachment Governor Kawira Mwangaza and the Governor accordingly continues to hold office,” Senate Speaker Amason Kingi declared after the Senators completed casting their votes.

Senator Bony Khalwale of Kakamega presided over a special eleven-member committee tasked with investigating the 62 allegations against her. The committee concluded that none of the allegations were supported by evidence.

Following the Senators’ refusal to establish a committee to deliberate on her removal, her case was subsequently transferred to the plenary.
