Threat to Impeach Wamatangi and Demand for Ksh5 Million Payment by MCAs

Kimani Wamatangi, the governor of Kiambu, is facing impeachment threats, with insiders claiming that a portion of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) demanded up to Ksh5 million each to drop the motion.

According to a document obtained by GossipA2Z, the MCAs discussed the removal of Wamatangi in their second session on April 26.

Earlier on Tuesday, April 18, nearly fifteen ward representatives (MCAs) in Kiambu County targeted several administration figures.

In a motion filed in the house, the MCAs demanded the dismissal of Nancy Kiruba, a member of the County Executive Committee for Finances, accusing her of negligence.

“We had a budget of Ksh16,3 billion, of which Ksh10 billion was for salaries and Ksh6.3 billion was for development.

“As we speak, Governor Wamatangi has only used Ksh600 million, which means we will have to return over Ksh4 billion to the Treasury because the current Financial Year ends in June 2023,” an agitated MCA stated on April 18.

The MCAs also lamented the Governor’s failure to put his house in order, which resulted in the resignation of seven County Executive Committee Members.

After delivering a letter to Governor Wamatangi, the MCAs accused him of bureaucratic tendencies at a press conference.

Another MCA asserted, “We have a Governor who wants to approve everything, including when a junior county official must replace a light bulb.”

However, in response, inside sources claimed that the 15 MCAs demanded a bribe of Ksh5 million for each of them, failing which they would move for the Governor’s impeachment. GossipA2Z was unable to independently verify claims because several MCAs were inaccessible.

The source also claimed that the impeachment motion brought against CEC Finance Nancy Kiruba was a ploy to deceive the public as they prepared to remove the Governor.

According to the Constitution, the Governor will continue to serve the people of Kiambu without fear or favor.

“The governor has clarified that elected positions are not a means of financial gain for leaders. This has upset some MCAs and MPs, who have vowed to exert pressure on the county executive in the hopes that he will relent.

In January 2023, Githiga Ward MCA Ruth Waithira (MCA Githiga) was also removed from her position. As chair of the committees for land, housing, physical planning, municipal administration, and urban development.

Waithira was accused of blackmailing developers, which he denied. The MCAs substituted Wambiri of Murera ward for her.

Previous governors of Kiambu, William Kabogo and Ferdinand Waititu, were both threatened with impeachment, with Waititu’s removal occurring on January 29, 2020. Waititu was accused of committing official misconduct and violating the Constitution.

A source with knowledge of the plot revealed, “Some have demanded that he allow them to manage road projects. So that they can strike deals with contractors, but he has refused.”

Governor Kimani Wamatangi expressed confidence that the people of Kiambu will always support him. And that he will not yield to the demands of rogue MCAs while addressing the issue on April 26.

Wamatangi declared, “If they want politics, they should know that I am a veteran in that field. And I dare them to continue on this path.”

“Many MCAs are excellent. However, some believe they were elected to make money. In an April 2023 address to the citizens of Kiambu, he added, “We will remain steadfast in our role.”
