Tensions Escalate in Kapsabet as Armed Youth Gather to Block Protests
Tensions are running high in Kapsabet town, Nandi County, where youth armed with clubs have assembled to thwart planned demonstrations against Governor Stephen Sang.
The youths have positioned themselves at Namgoi center along the Eldoret road, where the protesters were set to convene.
Residents, spearheaded by former MP Alfred Keter, have been rallying for the protests to demand what they describe as “accountability” from Governor Sang.
In response, Sang indicated that the armed youth were recruited by the business community to safeguard their investments from potential looting.
“I’ve been informed that the Kapsabet business sector took measures to shield their enterprises from planned vandalism and looting by individuals hired by political operatives and opportunists who aim to disrupt the peaceful demonstrations,” said Governor Sang.
He mentioned that there were reports suggesting the demonstration organizers intended to send troublemakers to target businesses supposedly owned by him in Kapsabet.
Governor Sang clarified that the organizers had circulated misleading information about him owning several businesses in Kapsabet, including a supermarket, hotel, bakery, electronics stores, and gas stations.
“As is common across Kenya, the business community is safeguarding their assets,” Sang noted.

He emphasized that while protesters are entitled to exercise their rights, they should never aim to destroy people’s livelihoods.
According to Sang, the business community also has the right to protect their properties and livelihoods.
“We expect security forces to ensure that protesters can exercise their rights lawfully, and the business community must also defend their assets within legal boundaries,” Sang stated.
Sang highlighted his administration’s openness to listen and address concerns through lawful and peaceful means.
“I am always available to listen, respond, and address any issues raised. I have done so before and will continue to do so. Currently, I am engaged in my regular official duties,” Sang added.
However, some youths at Namgoi defended the governor, arguing that the protests were politically motivated attempts to undermine him despite his strong performance.
“We believe those orchestrating the protests are politically motivated to target the governor, who we know has performed admirably,” said Jonnes Kirwa, one of the defenders.
