Dar es Salaam. Yesterday, the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) announced that it would prohibit the importation, distribution, and sale of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Baby Powder containing talc.

The TBS statement comes nearly two weeks after the standards body announced it was investigating the possible presence on the market of baby powder manufactured by the U.S. pharmaceutical giant J&J that contains talc, which is alleged to cause cancer in some countries.

J&J announced on April 4 that it would cease manufacturing talc-containing products in Dar es Salaam.

The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) banned J&J Baby Powder products containing talc yesterday.

During its investigation, the TBS determined that J&J Baby Powder containing talc was indeed available for purchase.

J&J announced on April 4 that it would cease manufacturing products containing talc after proposing an $8.9 billion (Sh21 trillion) settlement to resolve decades-old lawsuits alleging that its talcum powder products caused cancer.

The New Jersey-based company states that the proposed settlement, which must also follow approval by a bankruptcy court, “will equitably and efficiently resolve all claims arising from cosmetic talc litigation.”

Talcum powder containing asbestos has resulted in thousands of lawsuits against J&J.
