Tanganyika Law Society (TLS) President Boniface Mwabukusi has confirmed that Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi and Ugandan journalist Agatha Atuhaire are still being held by Tanzanian authorities.

On Wednesday, May 21, Mwabukusi released a statement correcting earlier reports that claimed the two had been deported. He explained that Mwangi and Atuhaire are no longer in police custody but are still under the control of Tanzania’s Immigration Department.

“We want to make it clear that Boniface Mwangi, a Kenyan journalist and activist, and Agatha Atuhaire, a Ugandan lawyer and journalist, have not been deported from Tanzania, as some reports suggested. While they are not with the police, they are still being held by the Immigration Department,” Mwabukusi said.

Legal Experts Demand Due Process

Mwabukusi called on Tanzanian officials to respect the law and ensure fair treatment. “We ask the Immigration Department to follow the Constitution and all legal procedures. Their actions must be lawful and respect human rights,” he stated.

He also reassured the public that legal support is in place to protect the rights of both Mwangi and Atuhaire. “Our legal team is closely watching the situation and is ready to take action to resolve it fairly and quickly,” he added.

Why Was Mwangi in Tanzania?

Boniface Mwangi had traveled to Tanzania to attend a court session for opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who is facing treason charges.

On Monday, May 19, Mwangi posted on social media that he feared for his life. He said armed men in plain clothes were outside his hotel room in Dar es Salaam and claimed to be police officers. However, they refused to show any identification.

“My life is in danger. I’m at the Serena Hotel in Dar es Salaam, and there are armed men outside my door. They say they are police, but they won’t show any ID. I won’t open the door unless they force it,” Mwangi posted.

Concerns Over Human Rights in Tanzania

Mwangi also spoke about his concerns regarding the worsening human rights situation in Tanzania under President Samia Suluhu’s government.

“I’m afraid for my life. This country has a record of kidnappings, killings, and jailing people who oppose the president. That’s why I’m not opening this door,” he said.

Activist Boniface Mwangi was released Monday morning after spending hours at the Kamukunji police station.

Mwangi was picked up from his Machakos home on Sunday morning and was later traced to Kamkunji police station in Nairobi, where he was detained.

The activist said that intimidation will not stop him from fighting for human rights.

He questioned the democracy of the country, saying that Kenyans should not be arrested for demanding their rights.

“Such things should not be happening in a democracy. But are we a democracy? Which democracy shoots unarmed children and arrests citizens for displaying their national flag?”

Moving forward, activist Mwangi said that Kenyans should focus on three things to move forward.

He asked Kenyans to courageously demand justice, arrest, and prosecution of individual officers who discharged their firearms unlawfully during the anti-government protests.

The activist further asked Kenyans to call for compensation for victims of alleged police killings.

“Right to citizenship. You cannot deny or sell us our national identity cards. All Kenyans who have reached the age of 18 must be issued with a voter’s card. It’s unconstitutional and illegal to deny citizens ID cards. Demand IDs and voters cards,” Mwangi said.

Activist Mwangi added that Kenyans should demand accountability from the country’s leaders.

“His manifesto, implementation of all constitutional reports and debt audit.”

After his release, Mwangi claimed that he was arrested in front of his children, and wasn’t informed of the reason for the arrest.

No charges were preferred against Mwangi.

Mwangi’s arrest happened ahead of his planned protests at the Standard Chartered marathon that took place on Sunday.

His wife, Njeri Mwangi, who traced the activist to the station, said police accused him of inciting the public.

“They are holding him over claims of incitement to violence. It is all about this marathon,” she said.

The marathon went on uninterrupted amid heavy security. Security was enhanced at the event with major roads blocked.

Police said they feared his followers would infiltrate the event and cause violence.

A campaign was immediately launched online to free Mwangi. This was shared widely by many social media enthusiasts.

Mwangi had been mobilizing his followers to join the protest at the marathon as one way of expressing discontent about the country’s leadership.

He expressed the anxiety of his daily life, stating that he kisses his children each day with the knowledge it might be his last, reflecting his deep sense of vulnerability amid threats from those he believes are trying to silence him.

Mwangi also shared images of two suspicious vehicles that he claimed were parked outside his office.

When confronted by security, the occupants presented themselves as police officers. Mwangi perceives this encounter as part of a larger scheme to intimidate him.

Despite the escalating threats, Mwangi remains resolute, asserting that he will not be easily intimidated.

He declared, “I’m ready to die,” demonstrating his fearless stance on activism and the emotional strain of living under such threats.

He stated, “On August 3rd, 2024, I died. I live each day as if it’s my last, and this overt intimidation, surveillance, and eavesdropping will not deter me. Ultimately, we all face death,” adding that the trauma from living under surveillance had nearly driven him to suicide.

Activist Boniface Mwangi has pledged to lead a procession to State House, urging President William Ruto to address the rising number of abductions.

Addressing the media outside the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Tuesday, September 3, Mwangi, who has transitioned from journalism to activism, criticized President Ruto’s administration for its inaction regarding the recent kidnapping of three Kenyans in Kitengela, Kajiado County.

Mwangi plans to march to the State House soon, where he intends to present a list of all missing individuals to the President.

This announcement came after Mwangi was released from custody in connection with accusations of inciting violence during recent anti-government protests.

The activist on Saturday left many Kenyans guessing with his cryptic message, which left netizens worried about his state.

“Boniface Mwangi has deactivated his accounts and we can’t get hold of him too, especially after the post he made. I spoke to him the other day and asked if he was okay and he mentioned how the attacks are always getting to him and my heart is so broken for him,” Hanifa posted on X.

Activist Boniface Mwangi was reportedly apprehended by police on Thursday while he was protesting at the Kenyatta Market in Nairobi.

Before his arrest, Mwangi was seen marching through Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) with other protesters, holding large placards and crosses. The demonstrators wore white T-shirts with red stripes.

The protest was abruptly ended when police intervened and began dispersing the crowd, leading to Mwangi’s arrest during the confrontation.

This arrest follows an incident earlier in the week when protesting youths reportedly invaded Mwangi’s office, accusing him of organizing the recent demonstrations.

In videos obtained by Gossipa2z.com, the youths are seen holding twigs and placards, demanding to speak with Mwangi.

“We want to end these demonstrations,” one protester said. “We seek peace, not protests,” another added.

“We bear the brunt when participating in such unlawful demonstrations. The government has promised to restore Kazi Kwa Vijana, and we are prepared to listen,” stated yet another protester.

Unknown people on Saturday, July 20, 2024, stormed activist Boniface Mwangi’s offices in Kilimani, Nairobi.

In a video shared by James wa Njeri on the X platform, the goons on motorbikes are seen around the activist’s office block that houses Sema Ukweli, a justice and human rights media organization that he uses to do his exposes.

“Goons on motorbikes have descended upon Boniface Mwangi’s Sema Ukweli Kenya offices, an independent media organization that highlights stories of injustice in Kenya. There have been posts by govt bloggers on social media inciting personal attacks against Bonnie and then this happens,” James Wa Njeri stated on X.

Boniface Mwangi has confirmed the presence of goons in his office compound in Kilimani.

Boniface Mwangi threatened

Taking to his official X account moments after the incident was highlighted by James wa Njeri, Mwangi stated that the goons were in the compound for about five minutes.

While in his office compound, Mwangi says the goons issued a lot of threats, vowing to attack his retirement home in Lukenya, Machakos County.

Reported to police

The activist says he has reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station which was booked vide Occurrence Book reference number 23 of 20/07/2024, with creating a disturbance as the main complaint.

He, however, maintains that the attacks will not scare him to tone down on his activism.

Hired goons

Mwangi, who has been at the forefront of advocating for change in government through the anti-government protests, claims that the goons have been hired.

“We have reported this incident to Kilimani Police Station. The hired goons were in our office compound for about 5 minutes and made a lot of threats. They said they would attack my home too. Cowardly attacks by a tone-deaf government, and their goons won’t scare me. Do better,” Mwangi stated.

Over the past few days, the activist has been facing attacks on social media, with a section of pro-government netizens accusing him of being funded to sponsor the anti-government protests.

Mwangi has, however, denied the allegations and vowed to continue advocating for justice and a better Kenya.

Nyali Member of Parliament, Mohamed Ali, and activist Boniface Mwangi clashed in a heated online exchange on Saturday following Mwangi’s criticism of Coastal leaders for their inability to address the drug problem in the area.

The activist raised concerns about the Nyali MP’s focus on organizing anti-LGBTQ demonstrations instead of addressing what he considers more urgent matters, such as the prospects for the youth’s future in the area.

”Mombasa youth are dying because of drug use. Leaders led by Nyali Mohamed Ali would rather hold a protest against gay people instead of focusing on what’s destroying their youth,?” the activist claimed.

The outspoken politician from the coast responded by suggesting that he focus on his own matters instead of meddling in things that are not his concern.

The war of words did not end there with the spat turning personal.

During the altercation, Boniface Mwangi challenged the outspoken MP to publicly display photos of his relatives as evidence of his commitment to family life and support for the concept of marriage.

Mwangi additionally suggested to the Member of Parliament that he should concentrate on implementing plans to safeguard future generations from harmful cartels, ensuring their well-being.

The Nyali MP, who has been at the forefront of protests against LGBTQ rights in both Nairobi and Mombasa, has expressed worries about foreign governments trying to promote their agenda within Kenya.

The demonstrations were sparked by a Supreme Court decision permitting the formation of associations for the LGBTQ+ community.

Mohamed Ali was one of the initial political figures advocating for a complete prohibition of LGBTQ activities and organizations in Kenya.

Homabay Town MP Peter Kaluma has additionally advocated for the prohibition of marriage between individuals of the same sex within the nation.

“These are not human rights. Those are demonic behavior and we cannot allow such behaviors in our country. We will not allow unions or any NGO associations for those kinds of people,” Ali said on March 15.
