Switch, Kiss TV Shut: Kenya’s Communications Authority Revokes 75 Broadcast Licenses(List)

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has recently revoked the licenses of 75 broadcasters to ensure that the broadcasting industry follows all necessary regulations.

This action took place between April and November 2024 and involved a variety of broadcasters, including television channels, FM radio stations, a broadcast signal distributor, and a Subscription Management Service.

Among the broadcasters requesting termination of their services were Econet Media (K) Ltd, a Subscription Management Service, and a number of television and radio stations, including Kiss TV, Kwese TV (which holds a Landing Rights License), Bamba TV, a self-provisioning Broadcast Signal Distributor, Switch TV, Mwinjoyo FM, KUSCCO FM, Tusmo FM, and Radio Ashe.

Of the 75 licenses revoked, 66 were taken away because the broadcasters did not comply with broadcasting regulations.

The remaining 9 broadcasters asked for their licenses to be canceled voluntarily. Some of the broadcasters who requested to stop their services included Econet Media (K) Ltd, a Subscription Management Service, as well as several TV and radio stations like Kiss TV, Kwese TV (with a Landing Rights License), Bamba TV, Switch TV, and a number of FM stations such as Mwinjoyo FM, KUSCCO FM, Tusmo FM, and Radio Ashe.

The CA also identified a number of TV stations whose licenses were revoked for not following the rules. These stations included Mwariama TV, Miracles TV, Magodo TV, and many more. There were also other affected TV broadcasters, such as Kilimo TV, Kathus TV, Jubilee TV, and several others.

In addition to the television stations, several FM radio stations also had their licenses revoked. These included Radio Luhya FM, Nacex FM, Somal FM, Kihooto FM, and Sky 106.1 FM.

The CA’s decision aims to enforce the country’s broadcasting laws and ensure that all media providers are operating in compliance with the necessary rules and standards.
