Student Killed in Bungoma Polytechnic Protest as Police Clash With Learners
A student from Bungoma National Polytechnic was reportedly killed on Tuesday during a violent clash between armed police and protesting students.
The standoff began earlier that day when students held demonstrations outside the institution, demanding the immediate removal of the school principal over accusations of fund embezzlement and mismanagement.
Protesters marched through Kandunyi Town, heading towards the office of Member of Parliament John Makali, hoping to bring the issue to his attention.
However, the peaceful protest escalated after police arrived to intervene, firing tear gas in an attempt to disperse the demonstrators.
Despite the efforts of the police, the students remained defiant, prompting the officers to intensify their response. It was during this confrontation that a female student was allegedly shot and killed.
Footage of the protest, now widely shared online, shows students waving twigs and placards, chanting for the principal’s removal.

Upon reaching the MP’s office, the students protested outside, demanding justice for the slain student and urging for accountability from the authorities.
As the protest continued, officials from the MP’s office were compelled to address the crowd, assuring the students that their grievances would be relayed to John Makali and that action would be taken.
These events come amid a wave of student protests across the nation. Recently, Moi University was forced to close after unrest broke out among students.
Moi University’s Vice-Chancellor, in a statement, directed all students to leave the premises immediately, with international students instructed to seek guidance from their respective departments.
The statement, dated Thursday, October 3, 2024, mentioned that teaching and learning activities for the 2024/2025 academic year were suspended due to staff strikes and student unrest.
The closure of the institution led to more protests outside the school, with students lighting bonfires and blocking roads leading to Eldoret City.
