Storm Brews As Museveni’s Confidant Condemns Murkomen Over Rwanda Remarks

Captain Mike Mukula, the Vice Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), has advised President William Ruto to either demand an apology or take action against Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen for his contentious comments regarding Rwanda’s governance.

Mukula, a high-ranking member of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni’s party, conveyed his discontent, stating that Murkomen’s comment labeling Rwanda’s leadership as autocratic was not just unnecessary but lacked diplomacy.

โ€œThe media attack not only risks straining the relationship between our nations but also undermines the trust built over years of collaboration.”

โ€œIt is crucial to address this matter promptly to prevent any further damage to the bilateral relations between Kenya and Rwanda,โ€ Mukula stated, warning that the remarks may not sit well with Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame.

President William Ruto with NRM Vice Chairperson Captain Mike Mukula during the COP28 Climate Summit, Dubai on December 1, 2023.

He additionally stressed the importance of upholding strong diplomatic ties between Kenya and Rwanda, highlighting that fostering transparent communication was crucial to sustaining peace and cooperation within East Africa.

โ€œIt is disheartening to witness such actions that undermine the principles we hold dear,โ€ he added.

Constitutional lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi criticized Murkomen for his comments, suggesting that Cabinet Secretaries should undergo training regarding fundamental principles of international cooperation and respect among nations.

โ€œCS Murkomen can’t attack a sovereign friendly state without provocation and disparage President Paul Kagame just like that. CSs must be taken through a crash course, teaching them the responsibilities that come with their new constitutional offices!โ€

Mohammed Hersi, a hotelier, pointed out that Rwanda’s performance surpassed Kenya’s and emphasized that comparing the sizes of the two countries was not pertinent to the discussion.

โ€œNo police roadblocks like we do in Kenya which is nothing but a bribe collecting tolls. Rwanda deploys cameras both fixed and mobile managed by the incorruptible police force.โ€

โ€œFighting corruption yes we can deploy technology but a system is only as good as the people and that is the point where our paths with Rwanda separate,โ€ he noted.

During an interview on Citizen TV on Monday evening, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Roads, Kipchumba Murkomen, expressed his view that Rwanda operates as an autocratic system. He advised Kenyans to avoid drawing comparisons between the political situations in the two countries.

โ€œThere whatever the President says is the law. For every decision you make in this country you must go through a proposal then Parliament then public participation.โ€

โ€œYou cannot compare the political situation in Rwanda and the size of the country with our country and our democracy,โ€ Murkomen stated.

In response, Murkomen clarified his admiration for Rwanda’s leadership approach, highlighting its effectiveness in developing robust infrastructure like a new airport. He also pointed out that Kenya’s leadership style is excessively bureaucratic, causing delays in making crucial and straightforward decisions that could positively impact people’s lives.

“Itโ€™s not just Rwanda. Countries like UAE, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia, among others, have a style of leadership that has delivered great success to their people because their leaders have the power to make firm decisions,” he noted while responding to lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi.

“Instead of you crying about Rwanda please cry for your country. Help us deal with, for example, court orders that award a contractor Ksh 10B for claims and interests for a contract worth Ks 2B or a road that stalls for 10 years because a competing bidder is still waiting for a decision of the court. Cry not for Rwanda, they are doing well. Cry for your country,” Murkomen added.
