Trade CS Moses Kuria threatened to cut government advertising to Nation Media Group (NMG) after an investigation revealed the misappropriation of over Ksh6 billion in an alleged oil scandal orchestrated by the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture.

This resulted in an uproar as various stakeholders weighed in on the matter. President Ruto, on the other hand, defended the CS’s remarks based on freedom of expression.

“We must defend the rights of the free press to criticize whatever they choose, even if it means writing lies. Ruto stated on June 21, 2023, “However, we must also defend those who hold the media accountable.”
