State House Clarifies Suluhu Visit Controversy

The government has distanced itself from Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu’s rumored visit to mediate between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto.

State House Spokesman Hussein Mohamed told GossipA2Z that opposition leader Raila Odinga or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which oversees foreign and State visits, would be better suited to discuss the details of the visit.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs could not be reached via telephone or text message.

“I cannot corroborate nor deny the allegations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in the greatest position to determine whether or not a president entered the country. I also refer you to the source of the allegations, Raila,” he said.

Raila asserted on Tuesday, July 26, that the Tanzanian President was recently in the country to mediate, but the government has neither verified nor denied this claim.

The opposition leader asserted that Suluhu had fortuitously attempted to broker a truce between the Kenya Kwanza and Azimio factions, but that the government thwarted her efforts by delaying her return to her country for several days.

Raila, speaking to local and international correspondents on July 25, 2023, stated that his side was prepared for negotiations, but the State thwarted those efforts.

Hours after the statement, President William Ruto invited Raila to one-on-one discussions to resolve the differences between the two opposing factions.

“Dear friend Raila Odinga, I am leaving for Tanzania to attend a human capital meeting to coordinate the expansion of employment opportunities on our continent,” he explained.

“I will return tomorrow (Wednesday) evening, and as you know, I am available to meet with you whenever it is convenient for you.”

Some members of the Kenya Kwanza camp appeared unnerved by the statement, as they vehemently stated that there would be no power-sharing agreement reached during the discussions.

“All is well; there is progress. Happy to hear that Raila has recovered from the illness, but when did he begin working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or as a spokesperson for the White House?” Majority Leader of the National Assembly Kimani Ichung’wah posed.
