Starehe MP Mwago Proposes Mandatory Community Service for Students After Secondary

Starehe MP Amos Mwago proposed on Wednesday that all students should be required to complete community service after finishing secondary education.

Mwago plans to bring this proposal to the National Assembly for discussion. If accepted, it would benefit students lacking the financial means to further their education.

The MP, affiliated with the Jubilee Party, believes this initiative would provide students who cannot pursue higher education with essential skills for employment.

He stressed that mandatory community service would provide students with both technical and life skills needed for the job market.

Mwago also highlighted that such a program could help decrease the high unemployment rate among youth, who might otherwise turn to criminal activities.

He noted that mandatory community service would foster an understanding of civic duty and contribute to community development.

However, Mwago did not specify the details of the training, though community service typically includes activities such as public space cleaning, volunteering, and tree planting.

The MPโ€™s proposal follows a similar suggestion made nearly a year ago by the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms, which recommended a program similar to the National Youth Service (NYS) of the 80s.

On August 1 of the previous year, the team proposed that students complete a three-month mandatory training after secondary school and a nine-month training for university graduates before entering the job market.

The teamโ€™s report recommended that the Ministry of Education develop and implement a policy for compulsory community service programs for students finishing senior school, TVET, and university education.

This recommendation aimed to promote peaceful coexistence, cultural appreciation, and work ethic among youth, preparing them for future responsibilities.
