Speaker Wetangula Bans MPs From Wearing Kaunda Suits In Parliament

Moses Wetangula, the speaker of the National Assembly, has prohibited members of parliament from adorning kunda suits while in the House.

On Tuesday, Wetangula referred to Rule 9 of the Speaker’s Rules. Which delineates the dress code for Members of Parliament (MPs). He stated that from now on, legislators will be prohibited from entering certain areas of the premises. Such as the chamber, lounge, dining room, and commute rooms, unless they are dressed appropriately.

Although his predecessors had permitted Members of Parliament to wear Kaunda suits. Wetangula stated that the garments, which are also referred to as Mao Zedong jackets are not acceptable attire for the House.

โ€œMy predecessors have had no issue with Kaunda suitsโ€ฆGoing forward, any attire outside what is prescribed in rule 9 of the Speakerโ€™s Rules is prohibited. This includes Kaunda suits, whether long or short-sleeved,โ€ he said.

โ€œAll members must observe rule 9 not only in the chamber but also in the committees, lounges, and in the dining areas.โ€

Speaker Wetangula contended that the traditional dress code of Parliament was being gradually supplanted by emerging fashion trends. Therefore, adherence to the rules was necessary to restore order in the House.

โ€œI do this to guard against negating the set standards, especially given the current preference for members to dress easily. This practice out rightly does not accord with the seriousness of the proceedings of the House and its committees.โ€

Concurrently, the Speaker prohibited males from donning hats, caps, traditional and cultural garments, and hats.

โ€œHats and caps for men are not permitted in the chamber and committees. Traditional and cultural attires are not permitted in the chamber, lounges, and dining areas,โ€ he stated.

As per the dress codes established by Parliament. Appropriate attire for males comprises a service uniform, a coat, collar, tie, long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, socks, and shoes. In contrast, business, formal, or smart casual attire is acceptable for women.
