Speaker Kingi Demands Severe Punishment for Shakahola Cult

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi desires “the harshest punishment possible” for those responsible for the cult in Kilifi County that has killed 58 people.

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) and the community policing program should take heed, Kingi said in a Monday statement.

“How did such a heinous crime, organized and carried out over an extended period, fly under the radar of our intelligence system?” How was evil of such staggering proportions able to occur undetected? How did this ‘pastor’ gather so many individuals, indoctrinate, brainwash, and starve them to death in the name of religion, and then bury them in a forest without being discovered?

He demanded increased vigilance from Kenyans in the future.

“Those responsible for the deaths of these innocent souls must receive the harshest punishment possible. To deter others from engaging in similar evil acts in the name of religion,” he added.

In the horrific incident, the leader of the cult, Pastor Paul Mackenzie Nthenge of the Good News International Church, allegedly instructed members to starve themselves to “meet Jesus.”

Mackenzie charged last month after two children starved to death while in his care. He is currently in custody.

The police announced on Monday that they had arrested fourteen cult members.

Security and humanitarian aid workers advise Kilifi County families to report missing people.
