According to a statement released by the presidency, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has arrived in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, to meet with Kenya’s President William Ruto.

In statements made at Juba International Airport before the president’s departure, the country’s acting foreign minister Deng Dau claimed that Kiir will “discuss trade, transport, and security management along their common borders.”

“They would also address regional peace and security, with a special focus on the problem in the eastern section of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan. According to what Malek had said, “We are committed to working together to promote peace and stability in the region.”

Kiir was accompanied to Kenya by top government officials, including presidential minister Barnaba Marial, acting foreign minister Deng Dau, cabinet minister Martin Elia Lomuro, and transport minister Madut Biar. Kiir was seen off at the airport by First Vice President Riek Machar, and he was accompanied to Kenya by senior government officials.

South Sudan counts Kenya as one of its most important regional partners. Kenya has been a significant backer of South Sudan’s peace process, and the two nations maintain robust commercial relations with one another.

The visit, Kiir’s first since William Ruto’s election as president of Kenya the previous year, is considered an opportunity for the two nations to enhance their collaboration and work together to address the difficulties facing the region.
