Sondu Clashes: Gov’t Transfers All Kisumu-Kericho Border Security Heads

The government has now intervened to quell the mounting tension at the Kericho-Kisumu border in Sondu town, where at least seven people have been killed and several others injured in clashes.

Prof. Kithure Kindiki, minister of the interior, announced in a statement to newsrooms on Thursday evening that the government had decided to reassign security chiefs from both sides of the border.

CS Kindiki added that all other security officers discovered to be complicit in the clashes will also be transferred, and the criminals will be apprehended.

A multi-agency security team has been deployed to Sondu to restore calm and normalize the situation in the region, he added.

“This evening, the government has deployed a contingent of specialized security personnel to prevent the escalation of violent crime in Sondu Town and the surrounding areas. During the past two days, lives have been lost, property has been devastated, and civil order has been gravely compromised,” stated the CS.

“The special deployment will be jointly supervised by the Rift Valley and Nyanza regional security teams, with strict orders to ensure the immediate return to normalcy and the arrest and prosecution of every perpetrator of the heinous crimes committed against the residents of Sondu Town and its environs.”

“In the interim, it has been decided to transfer all local security chiefs on both sides of the border, as well as other security and public officers whose lack of effectiveness, impartiality, and/or competence is believed to have contributed to the criminals’ success,” said the interior minister.

Kindiki went on to say that he would announce additional measures aimed at containing the violence and restoring peace on Friday, following an evaluation and review of the current measures.
