Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga Elected Chair of Senate Energy Committee

Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Odinga has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Energy. His election took place on Thursday, February 20, with unanimous support from committee members.

Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kipkemoi Kisang will serve as his deputy.

The Energy Committee oversees key matters related to fossil fuel exploration, development, production, maintenance, and energy regulation. Previously, it was led by Nyeri Senator Wamatinga Wahome.

Committee members include Danson Buya Mungatana, Mohamed Abass Sheikh, Boni Khalwale, Olekina Ledama, Ekomwa James Lomenen, and Edwin Sifuna.

Oburuโ€™s appointment comes amid major Senate reshuffles that saw allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua removed from influential committees.

Murangโ€™a Senator Joe Nyutu lost his position in the Senate Education Committee, while Kiambu Senator Karungo Thangwa was ousted as Chair of the Roads and Transport Committee.

Kirinyaga Senator James Murango was removed as Agriculture Committee Chair, and Nyandarua Senator John Methu lost his role as Chair of the Environment and Natural Resources Committee.

Other senators affected by the shake-up include Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, and Kajiadoโ€™s Lenku Seki.

The changes are seen as part of a broader political realignment, strengthening the alliance between former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and President William Ruto.
